Description
South Africa.- Law.- [Stanford (Sir Robert)] Loyalty and its Reward; or, Justice versus law, at the Cape of Good Hope in the nineteenth century, errata f. at end, contemporary ink annotations and passage markings, lacking B1-3, supplied in modern copy, D4 lower corner torn with loss of a few letters, occasional spotting or staining, lightly browned, original cloth, covers detached, backstrip loose, rubbed, large 8vo, Cape Town, Mathew, Chevens & Bryant, 1859.

⁂ 'An account of the case of Sir Robert Stanford, who had supplied the government with food during the convict agitation, 1849' (Mendelssohn); here with contemporary related ink annotations. The Neptune was a convict ship bound for Cape Town carrying 282 prisoners, the majority of whom were Irish, and were intended to undertake construction projects in the town. The locals petitioned to prevent this, as they did not want Cape Town to become a prison colony. The ship was therefore forced to anchor within sight of land for 5 months before finally accepting defeat and changing its course for Tasmania. Stanford provided aid to the people onboard the Neptune by ferrying supplies to them. For his act of mercy he and his family were ostracised by society; his children being expelled from school and his family denied access to medical treatment, which tragically resulted in the death of a child.
