Description
4 PC. 1841 CONTINENTAL SILVER TEA SET W/ LARGE TRAY: Approx. 75.69 Troy ounces. This beautifully engraved 4-piece Sterling Silver Tea Set sits on an impressive, large reticulated silverplate tray with handles and feet. Teapot markings as follows: Stamped clover containing E E over B over J W is the hallmark of Edward, Edward Jr., John and W. Bernard from 1841 was sold by Turner John & Thomas, Goldsmiths & Jewelers to the queen, 58 & 59 New Bond street. The sovereign head indicates that the duty was paid in London in 1841. The old English style "F" in the shield represents the date when it was made, 1841. Turner and John Thomas are possibly the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world, the origin of this business having been established by Anthony Nelme c. 1680. This is a predecessor silversmith of Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd., a business that is still active today. Each piece is marked as such, as well as having a cursive engraving of the name "Desloge." This represents the Desloge family. The tea set came from the Vouziers mansion near St. Louis, built by the Desloge family and now owned by The Boeing Company. The Desloge family rose to wealth through international commerce, sugar refining, oil drilling, fur trading, mineral mining, railroads, real estate and riverboats. The family has funded hospitals and donated large tracts of land for public parks and conservation. The Desloge family entertained Russian ballerinas and Shakespearean actors, King Hussein of Jordan, the exiled Chancellor of Austria Kurt Schuschnigg (giving him brief shelter after he was deposed by the Nazis), and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Approx. 75.69 Troy ounces.
