Description
A. Lincoln Albumen Photo, 1864 Brady Portrait
Albumen photograph of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) in a seated position, 4” x 5.5”, laid down to a decorative mount measuring 6” x 8”. At verso in an unknown hand, “Lincoln / Photo by Brady / 1864”, along with some faint pencil notations. Mount is uniformly toned, with minor foxing and light corner bumping. Overall, in near fine condition.
This portrait sitting took place on February 9, 1864 at Mathew Brady’s Gallery in Washington, D.C. In 1895, Lincoln's son Robert T. Lincoln wrote of this image, "I have always thought the Brady photograph of my father, of which I attach a copy, to be the most satisfactory likeness of him." A different portrait from the same sitting, of Lincoln's profile, served as the basis for the image of Lincoln on the one-cent coin, first minted in 1909. Another served as the basis for the United States $5 bill, redesigned in 2006.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
