Description
P.T. Barnum Pair of Cut Signatures as Connecticut Politician & PhilanthropistÂ
A pair of (2) cut signatures inscribed "Truly Yours/P.T. Barnum". Light toning throughout with minor ink smudging to some. An interesting pairing! The lot includes:
1.) Measuring 3.5" x 2", January 16, 1875, Bridgeport, CT.
2.) Measuring 3.5" x 2.25", April 18, 1877, Bridgeport, CT. Adorned with a personal stamp.
Despite claiming a general distaste for politics, Barnum (1810-1891) was elected Mayor of Bridgeport in 1875, a position he served for one year, during which time he sought to improve the water supply, bring gas lighting to streets, and enforce laws related to liquor and prostitution. Later in 1878, he would play a fundamental role in the founding of Bridgeport Hospital and acted as their first president.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
