Native American Indian Chief Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick CDV
c. 1860 Civil War Era, Carte de Visite Photograph of Native American Indian Chief Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick (HOLE IN THE DAY) THE CELEBRATED CHIPPEWA CHIEF, by Whitney's Gallery, St. Paul, Minnesota, Very Fine.
Handsome dynamic Portrait of the Standing Native American Indian Chief, by Whitney's Gallery of St. Paul, Minnesota. This Carte de Visite image measures 3-2/8" x 2.25" card mount measuring 4.25" x 2.5" with blank reverse.
This Chief is identified on the mount as "PO-GO-NAY-KE-SHICK (HOLE IN THE DAY) THE CELEBRATED CHIPPEWA CHIEF." Period light pencil notation on the bottom mount edge reads: "Another one of my friends." Overall clear with some light soiling and tone. Author Bruce White, in his book: "We Are At Home: Pictures of the Ojibwe People," wrote this about Chief Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick: "The image Po-Go-Nay-Ke-Shick projected in his photographs was in keeping with his reputation and entrepreneurial behavior. His frock coat and blanket, combined with a magnificent feathered turban style headdress, represented his roles of both Warrior and Diplomat. Yet this combination also symbolized that he was neither a 'blanket' Indian, nor one who had completely assumed the new characteristics that whites sought to impose on native people."
