Description
TWO BRONZE AND WROUGHT IRON ART DECO ENTRY GATES AND SURROUNDS ATTRIBUTED TO OSCAR BACH
American, early 20th century. The fine craftsmanship and lively, organic design of these gates, together with the classical and mythological details suggest the work of Oscar Bruno Bach (German/American, 1884-1957).
100 x 60 in. (254 x 152.40 cm.) & 100 x 65 1/2 in. (254 x 166.37 cm.)
Removed from a house in St. Louis, MO (9625 Ladue Road) designed by renowned architect George Hellmuth and built in 1926. Hellmuth was a native of St. Louis and son of architect George W. Hellmuth. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in architecture in 1929 and a master's degree in 1930. He began his career as an architect of the city of St. Louis in 1932, designing civic structures including police stations and bus shelters. He went into private practice in 1949, founding Hellmuth, Yamasaki and Leinweber. In 1954, that firm was succeeded by Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum which became the modern firm HOK, which was, in 2018, the largest U.S.-based architecture-engineering firm. Its president is Bill Hellmuth, a grandson.
