Description
Vintage heavy pottery Art Deco burgundy glaze teapot marked on the bottom "McCormick Tea Baltimore, Md. Made in USA". Such teapots were produced for McCormick Spice Company by Hall China (East Liverpool, OH), c. late 1930s.
This 6-cup teapot is 6.1/2" [16.5cm] high at the top of the lid, and 8.7/8" [22.6cm] from spout to handle, 3" [7.6cm] across the round base, no chips, very good/ fine condition.
For many years, the name McCormick was as synonymous with tea as with spices. According to company history, McCormick began selling tea in 1905. By 1910, McCormick became one of the earliest producers of tea in gauze pouches, the earliest tea bags. McCormick opened the tea room in 1934, replicating an early English tea house, surrounded by a replica of a 16th-century English village. Before the tea room, the company distributed teapots to promote its tea. The earliest of these pots were made by the Bennett Pottery Co., a Baltimore firm that lasted until the Depression. By 1930s, these teapots were produced for McCormick Spice Company By Hall China (East Liverpool, OH).
