Description
Grant & Lee CDV, "The Surrender of Gen. Lee"
Carte de visite depicting the surrender of Robert E. Lee. Measuring 2.375" x 3.9", ca. 1865, n.p. Detailed image of Grant sitting across from Lee as he signs the terms of surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, based on the original Currier and Ives lithograph. Toning and soiling present on both sides, slightly bumped corners. Condition is very good.
Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the Civil War, after all outlets of retreat had been blocked off by the Union army. On the surrender of the South, Grant famously stated "The Confederates were now our countrymen, and we did not want to exult over their downfall".
