Description
A Civil War-themed lot comprised of a souvenir liquor advertisement prominently featuring Confederate General Robert E. Lee; as well as nine mostly Civil War period cartes de visite depicting George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Henry Halleck, Hugh Judson Kilpatrick, and others. Please refer to catalog photos for more information about the condition.
The lot consists of:
1. A souvenir advertisement, late 20th century, for Special Deep Spring Whiskey, "The Whiskey Without an Unkind Thought." The painted tin or toleware plaque has raised, three-dimensional designs. It depicts Robert E. Lee on his white horse Traveler saluting Confederate soldiers, while a civilian nurse wets the lips of an injured private in the foreground. The plaque is marked with copyright information at lower right; it was manufactured by the AAA Sign Co. (Coitsville, Ohio) after original designs by J.W. Kelly & Co. and the American Lithographic Co. Expected wear including isolated scuffs, rust marks, and scratches, else near fine. 11.375" x 16.125" x .25."
2. A group of nine period sepia-colored cartes de visite, mostly related to the American Civil War, published by C. Harris, Joseph Ward, Philp & Solomons, Silsbee, Case & Co., and W.M. E. Abbott & Co. Eight of the nine sitters have been identified, with one visually unidentified but attributed by a former collector to be John McLean. Expected wear consistent with age. The average size is 2.375" x 4."
