War Dated Union Army Visitor's Pass
Partially Printed Document Signed, "Jas. E. Montgomery", as Assistant Adjutant General, 1p, on "Head Quarters Military District" light orange stationery, 5.25" x 3.125", Washington, January 30, 1863. Pass No. 98a is stamped vertically across center in red, "NOT TRANSFERABLE". Expected light wear includes very minor soiling and creasing, else in near fine condition.
By order of John H. Martindale, "Pass the Bearer, Mrs. Kate Rowland" within the lines to Upton's Hill, VA, for the reason of "Visiting". At verso, Rowland signs a loyalty oath as "Mrs. Katie Rowland", and she is identified as "19 Years", "5 feet", and "White". The color of her hair and eyes has been left blank. This appears to be a one-day pass, as it expires on the same day as it was issued.
John Henry Martindale (1815-1881) was an American lawyer, Union Army general, and politician. Hhe was brevetted a major general and held the post of Military Governor of Washington, D.C., from November 1862 to May 1864. After that, Martindale returned to field service, fighting with the XVIII Corps in the Bermuda Hundred Campaign, the Battle of Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg, commanding the corps briefly in mid-July 1864. In September 1864, Martindale resigned his commission due to his ill health.
