John Tyler (1790-1862) 10th President. 8” x 10” autograph letter signed, Washington, April 16, 1841, to “Hon the Secretary of the Navy,” (George E. Badger). Tyler became the tenth President of the United States on April 4th, 1841, two weeks earlier, when President William Henry Harrison died. “…I feel a deep interest that …Murdough would receive a Mid shipman’s warrant. I cannot urge you to violate any rule which you have established or to do any thing which would exceed the ,,,of the service – but may not exceptions be occasionally made? I submit however the whole matter to yourself with the fullest confidence….”
