Description
[Manuscript/Ephemera] Extensive manuscript list of enslaved people belonging to a Virginia planter, circa 1798. The records names 57 enslaved men, women and children to the estate of Col. John Hooe of Virginia, with their ages and values. The individuals range from Kitt, age 65 to Emanuel, one month. Some notes are appended, saying that Abraham has one arm and Mingo has fistula, for example. There is also a detailed list of Hooe's household furnishing (walnut chest, blue-edged dishes, plated candlesticks, etc.), giving a fine look at the furnishing of a large planter's home and estate.11 pages (7 1/2" x 12"). Not dated but early as the value of the enslaved person are given in pounds and shillings and the paper is watermarked to the 1794-1815 period. The names of African-Americans before being first recorded in the 1870 Federal census are very difficult to obtain, making documents like this with an extensive listing highly unique and valuable.John Hooe (1728-1798) was born in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, VA and died near Colchester, Fairfax County.
