Lincoln Campaign Broadsheet with U.S. Grant Appeal Highlighting the Dire State of the Confederacy 

A 4pp broadsheet, 5.75" x 9.25", August 16, 1864, City Point, VA, and September 2, 1864, Washington, D.C. The two sheets have almost completely separated. Pages show moderate foxing and chipping at edges, with a few small areas of paper loss. Overall, in very good condition.

A fascinating printed letter by Ulysses S. Grant to the Honorable E. B. Washburne, proselytizing the imminent demise of the South. In part, "The rebels have now in their ranks their last man. The little boys and old men are guarding prisoners, guarding railroads, and bridges...A man lost by them can not be replaced. They have robbed the cradle and the grave equally to get their present force. Besides what they lose in frequent skirmishes and battles, they are now losing from desertion and other causes at least one regiment per day. With this drain upon them the end is not fair distant…Their only hope now is a divided North…I have no doubt but the enemy are exceedingly anxious to hold out until after the Presidential election. They have many hopes from its effects....To have peace on any terms, the South would demand the restoration of their slaves already freed...and they would demand a treaty which would make the North slave hunters for the South."

On the verso of Grant's letter, "The Presidential Campaign of 1864 / Union Congressional Committee", in which the Committee proposed to issue additional documents for distribution among the people. Included among the long list of documents for distribution is "What Lincoln's administration has done", again highlighting the growing tension of the period.

A wonderful introspective accounting of a turning point in the Civil War by Ulysses S. Grant, with a reference to Lincoln's presidential campaign and the upcoming presidential election.
