Description
This is a 1950s era Berkshire Deluxe dress blue US Army cap bearing a bullion cap eagle, and bullion oak leaves throughout. The interior has the letters J.M.W. stamped on the sweatband, and the printed card has the General Jonathan Maythew (typo) Wainwright IV on it. The cap size is a 7 1/8. The consignor notes no history with it other than it appears to be unworn. This was possibly a cap for post WWII events just prior to his death in 1953 or could just be a display piece. Regardless, it is a nice setup with a seldom seen bullion cap eagle. There is some stain residue on the front oak leaves just below the eagle. General Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV was a career American army officer and the Commander of Allied forces in the Philippines at the time Japan surrendered to the United States, during World War II. Wainwright was a longtime Japanese Prisoner of War and later recipient of the Medal of Honor for his courageous leadership during the fall of the Philippines.
