Description
1835 1ed Six Months House of Correction Anti Protestant Irish Catholic Boston
An exceptionally rare, and scarcely printed first edition of ‘Six Months in a House of Correction.’ Written by William Joseph Snelling under the pseudonym, “Dorah Mahony” this satirical work of fiction was a rebuttal to a book published earlier the same year. That work was Rebecca Theresa Reed’s polarizing account, ‘Six Months in a Convent.’
Reed’s story was urgently written and published following an 1834 mob riot that would burn down the Ursuline Convent at Mount Benedict in Massachusetts. Reed was blamed for the riot because of her prior public testimony regarding her escape from the convent in 1832. Her account was published in attempt to help clarify the situation and ease tensions. One of her primary claims was that, as a protestant girl at the convent school, she was forced into Catholicism and would face terrible consequences if she disobeyed.
Responding to this claim, “Dorah Mahony” describes a similar experience of being in a Boston prison and facing her own level of suffering and adversity at the hands of Protestants because of her Irish Catholic beliefs.
