This small Confederate battle flag was delicately woven, block-printed, and attached to a small wooden dowel. An accompanying note, attributed to the United Confederate Veterans Chapter #121 in Richmond, Virginia, is dated 1907 and states: “This is one of the funeral flags that was carried by the V.M.I. cadets at the funeral of Gen. T.J. Stonewall Jackson in Lexington VA, May 1863.”

Jackson’s funeral took place on May 15, 1863 after a solemn, multi-day viewing in Richmond. Jackson’s body arrived in Lexington by boat on the night of May 14, where it was met by cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. These students provided a formal military escort to the Institute. Once there, the coffin was placed in Jackson's old classroom, which had been draped in mourning. Cadets stood guard over Jackson's mortal remains that night. The four smooth-bore cannons of the Institute, called the "Four Apostles," were fired hourly in tribute. Cadets then accompanied the coffin to the Lexington Presbyterian Church the next morning, where Jackson was ultimately buried in the attached cemetery.


According to the note, this small flag was in the possession of one of the cadets that participated in this sad event. While similar block-printed Union parade flags from the era are frequently available for sale, Confederate examples such as this are exceedingly rare.

Both items are housed in a museum-quality frame. Flag measures 6 x 6 inches.
