1864 Lincoln Presidential Campaign Political Broadside
1864 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Political Broadside titled, "The Two Roads to Peace!," Choice Extremely Fine.
Historic Abraham Lincoln Civil War Period Broadside measures 11.5" x 8.75" and is in near pristine condition. The small typeface was printed in black on pale cream wove period paper that is as bright as the day it was published. Folded into sixths but it lays flat. This Broadside document is purely political, obviously in favor of the Lincoln candidacy for President. Great Civil War political content in a visually appealing form for display.
The "Two Roads" include the Chicago Platform of General George B. McClellan and the Baltimore Platform of Abraham Lincoln. Published in New York by the National Union Executive Committee for distribution sometime between August 1864 and the Presidential election in November of the same year. In a nutshell, the differences in the two platforms came down to this:
"The Chicago Platform proposes that the Rebellion be stopped by IMMEDIATE EFFORTS FOR A CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES on the part of the Government. The Baltimore Platform proposes to 'quell it by FORCE OF ARMS. The first is Surrender -- the last VICTORY! Which do you prefer."
