Description

Incredible partial unbound publisher's portfolio from the 1929 Edward Steichen monograph by Carl Sandburg, titled "Steichen, The Photographer". Includes (29) un-bound folded sheets printed in quarto format, almost entirely un-trimmed - plus a trimmed single leaf with a portrait of Steichen which served as the frontispiece of the first edition. (44) of the original of 49 photogravure plates are represented - including photographs of Charlie Chaplin, Isadora Duncan, Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, J. Pierpont Morgan, and many more - as well as several examples of the photographer's fashion and advertising work - plus pages 7-70 of the written introduction by Sandburg. Among the missing plates is Steichen's portrait of the Sandburgs entitled "Mr. and Mrs.", which has been trimmed from the original sheet. Provenance: With memo signed by Helga Sandburg, reading "Set of folios left over at publishers when 'Steichen, The Photographer' by Carl Sandburg was published by Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, in 1929, in an issue of 925 copies. For Jack Barker, courier, from Helga Sandburg." Dimensions: (Folded sheet) H 12.5" x W 9.5" Condition: Frontispiece portrait of Steichen with tears to edges. Very light age toning to page margins; a few small stray marks to pages. Overall very few signs of wear.
