Ulysses S. Grant Cabinet Card Taken Four Days Before His Death
A cabinet card of former president and Union General Ulysses S. Grant, taken four days prior to his death. Measuring 6.5" x 4.25", Mount McGregor, New York, copyright July 22, 1885. The photo depicts Grant reading a newspaper on the porch of his home in Mount McGregor, taken just four days before he died of throat cancer. He is dressed in a black suit, a stovepipe hat, and slippers. This photo is the last known photo of President Grant before his passing, taken by photographer John G. Gilman for the Albany Journal on July 19, 1885. Also in the photograph, just inside the doorway, sits in profile William Henry Harrison Terrell, who went by Harrison. A former slave, Terrell had worked as a paid servant at the Grants’ household for several years. When Grant was betrayed by a business partner and went bankrupt, Terrell stayed on at the house despite no longer earning a wage. The photo has worn corners and edges, with minimal curvature. No backstamp present on verso. Overall very fine.
