Jozef Czapski was born in Prague in 1896. After the war, Czapski started artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. His teachers included Wojciech Weiss and Józef Pankiewicz. He was a member of the Paris Committee. During this period, Czapski's painting was influenced by the aesthetics of the Kapists. In the 1930s he painted still lifes, interiors, portraits, and outdoor scenes. Czapski's painting output is very heterogeneous due to various inspirations. After the war, one of the main themes in the artist's work was an ordinary, gray man, lonely in the hustle and bustle of a big city. After studying law in St. Petersburg, Jozef Czapski studied painting in 1921-24 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, including with J. Pankiewicz. In 1924-31 he stayed with a group of Kapists in Paris. During World War II, imprisoned in the USSR, from where, as an officer in the army of General W. Anders, Czapski moved through the Middle East and Italy to France. He painted portraits, interiors, landscapes, city views, flowers, still lifes, scenes from theatrical performances, in which color and light played the most important role. He attached more importance to the construction of the picture than other capists, he strove for a synthetic approach to the object and to bring out the dramatic expression. After the war, Jozef Czapski painted the simplest motifs from everyday life, urban scenes, a human figure against the background of common surroundings, deepening his studies of nature, its forms and colors. Before the war, he edited Glos Plastyków, and after the war he collaborated in Paris with the emigration monthly Kultura. He has written several books on art. He described his experiences from his stay in the USSR in the book "Na nieludzkiej swiata".
