Description
U.S. Model 1850, German Import Staff And Field Officer's Sword, Presented To Capt. Andrew Graff, 65th Regiment, N.Y. National Guard, L 38'' | 33" single edge blade etched with scrolling floral designs, crossed flags, U.S., and E Pluribus Unum under an eagle crest. Marked at the ricasso and spine "P.D Luneschloss Solingen". Cast brass guard and pommel with scrolling floral designs and "U.S.". Wire-wrapped shagreen grip. Browned steel scabbard with brass mountings, engraved at the top: "Presented to / Capt. A. Graff / by the members / of C Co. 65th Regt / N.G.N.Y.S. / Aug. 15th 1867". According to the publication The Union Army: A History of Military Affairs in the Loyal States, 1961-65: "Sixty-fifth Regiment.—-This was a Buffalo organization, which furnished parts of the 21st and 49th Infantry and of Battery I, 1st artillery, in 1861, and supplied the nucleus of the 187th infantry in 1864. It was ordered to Harrisburg, Pa., on June 18, 1863; left the state the following day, commanded by Col. Jacob Krettner, with Francis Fischer as lieutenant-colonel and Lorenz Gillig as major; was mustered into the U. S. service at Mount Union, Pa., for 30 days; spent its term of service at that place; was mustered out at Buffalo on July 30; and was on duty at the time of the draft riots in New York City."
Condition
Grip appears to have been re-wrapped. Minor pitting and small chips at the edge of the blade. Denting and scuffing to the scabbard.
