Davids notes: This work was found in the home of an Italian American physician a few weeks ago, in Riverdale NY, overlooking the Hudson river. Although in his family for over 50 years, the physician could not remember how his family came to own it, but believes it was a gift some 50 to 75 years ago. The stretcher, canvas and workmanship suggests an 18th century copy of the famous 16th century work,but could be either earlier or later.
The composition of the work, a young man in 16th century clothes carrying a violin bow, is sometimes attributed to Raphael, but David Killen Gallery could not ascertain a Raphael work similar to this one, only examples on the internet ascribed or attributed to Raphael. The most common attribution is Sebastian Piombo who, as a young man, came to Rome during the Renaissance to study painting and quickly became close to Raphael who taught him a great deal. Piambo went on to develop a reputation as a great artist during the 16th century, most often as a portraiture artist. One can see the influence of Raphael in the sensitive, extraordinary handling of the face, which has the angelic beauty one of the great Raphael paintings.
A recent sale of another example of The Violinist described as an 18th century copy after both Piambo and Raphael, sold for approximately 7000.00.
