Description
Very rarely encountered in this size, dating to the Katipunan era and showing Spanish formal influence, the grip of a single section of turned and faceted hardwood with matching brass ferrule and pommel. The long, straight, double-edged blade of flattened diamond section, the rectangular forte engraved with the triangle crest of the Philippines symbolizing Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, above FILIPINAS in elaborate letters. The triangle symbol is said to have been devised by Andres Bonifacio. It is further reputed to represent the three provinces, Visayas, Luzon and Mindanao. Late 19th century. Well worn, corrosion to grip, blade with pitting. Overall length 88cm. Condition II
