Item Details
Description
Group of three pieces, two pair of Japanese WWII naval battleship "Big Eye" binoculars, and tripod, comprising one nickel plated brass pair of binoculars having a plaque in Japanese to the underside, a TOKO nickel plated brass pair, and one steel adjustable folding telescopic tripod, allowing the binoculars to rotate 360 degrees, accompanied by three disk feet.

Approximate dimensions: TOKO w. 27.5, d.13.75", 2nd pair w. 31", d. 12"; tripod closed h. 57.5".
Condition
The large binocular set is 20x -120 mm. The smaller set objective lens is 80mm. The 20-120mm set is mounted on the tripod. The P.D. {pupil distance} from the center of the ocular lens to the other is set and locked by a set screw. This is the 20x120 mm set. Set size as follows.
a. 24.25 inches long when the ocular lens is fully extended. b. Ocular end width is 8.75 inches.
The Objective end width is 11.9375 inches.

Second set size of the 20-80mm. 16 inches from back of ocular lenses to front of objective lens housing. Objective lens width is 8.57625 inches, outside housing to outside housing. Width is 8 inches outside to each collar end. Collar controls consistent movement of the ocular lens housing. P.D. Range is 2.5 to 2.75.

Top-down mount condition.
1. Range of motion.
Binocular range of motion control lock down. This has a lever that attaches to a brass pinching block. This mechanism operates correctly without incumbrance. This is firm when applied and holds binoculars steady for use. The nickel-plated brass mount ties the binocular to the range of motion mount.

2. The nickel-plated attachment neck extends down to a 360-degree swivel of which it has graduated markings from 0-180 degrees on each side. This is the windward and leeward degree settings.

3. The un-plated brass elevator riser operates freely within the range set by the manufacturer. No incumbrance exhibited during use. The elevator elevation adjustment wheel operated smoothly with all teeth undistorted without metal fatigue and has a consistent pitch.

4. The brass screws look factory set with no distortion or tampering. The steel adjustment screws show some use but no distortion beyond typical use.

Tripod
1. Most of the nickel plating has diminished on the outside of the legs due to weathering. This is so typical of binocular tripods of this era that had been out in the elements. A sure sign of operational use. Inside much of the original nickel plating remains. This indicated that nothing has been changed or moved around after leaving the factory.
2. one leg looks to have been put on backwards by the foot push down tongue sitting inside. However, some modern survey tripod legs are sometimes set up like this for one person to install. 3. Legs look straight. and undamaged. Each has a removable foot mount for on deck use.

4.Let out and stabilizing chains are missing most of their original nickel plating. Original end hooks are present.

5. Large brass wingnuts are used to hold the legs to the mounting bracket with a steel pin.

6. Attached filter lens box operates correctly and freely. The box contains 2 sets of filters. Each set has a different color lens for filtering ambient light.

7. The left lens has a 13mm straight line shallow scratch and an 8mm meandering scratch. Both were difficult to catch with a fingernail. When looking through the ocular lens there appears to be no apparent distortion, light diffusion or refraction. This does not mean it does not exist. Examination prior to purchase is encouraged whenever buying anything lensed.

Overall everything is tight and operates as originally built.
