Description
Jim Carson (Georgia / North Carolina, b. 1942), "Those Left Behind", 2023, oil on canvas
sight: 44 x 70 in., frame: 53 x 79 in.
Provenance: From the studio of the artist
Known for his romantic depictions of the West, Jim Carson thoroughly researches his subject matter, which combines romantic idealism and chronicled historical events. He became enamored of the West when he, at age thirteen, spent several weeks at the Philmont Boy Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Originally a New Yorker, Carson attended the Art Students League and illustrated western novels. He earned a PhD in chemistry, but his first love was, and continues to be, art.
Artist's story accompanying painting:
"Between 1840 and 1869, 420,000 people went west in wagon
trains in order to settle new parts of the United States. Some were
born on the trail and some were buried on the trail. The trip was
extremely dangerous; attacks by Indians, storms and terrible
weather, mountains and rivers to cross, and sickness among other
perils. It took brave people to attempt it, searching for a better life.
This painting depicts the westward migration on the Oregon Trail,
which started in Missouri near present day Kansas City, and ended
in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The trail was about 2,170
miles and could take up to six months to travel."
