Pleasing collection of three wooden relics, all with period notes that indicate they were carved from wood taken from Jefferson Davis’s mansion, known as the “White House of the Confederacy”. These objects include a letter opener, gavel, and small button. The ink note paired with he letter opener is remarkably specific as to where and how it was made: “Paper Cutter made from frame of Davis mansion (White House of Confederacy) / Now Confederate Museum Richmond VA / Purchased at Museum January 7, 1907 / A: Room in which Winnie Davis was born / B: Jefferson Davis’s office where Lincoln held reception.” The A and B notations refer to an accompanying period postcard of Davis’s mansion; various windows are noted with the corresponding letter. Davis’s house was occupied by Union forces upon the fall of Richmond and subsequently used as a military base during the Reconstruction era. Local preservationists saved the home from destruction around the turn of the 20th century and converted it into a museum. Curiosity seekers clamored for relics from the historic home, from the Civil War era and beyond. All items were attached to a heavy cardboard mount for display, likely in the early 20th century, and remain in excellent condition.
