Description
Pre-Columbian, Esmeraldas, Ecuador, Tumaco La Tolita, ca. 350 BC to 350 AD. Size 5 1/4 inches high + stand. A striking, lifelike head from a larger statue, its entire surface coated in a grey pigment. The face is sensitive, with wide eyes and a pierced nose, likely once had gold rings or feathers threaded through them. On both cheeks there is a single round scarification. In this culture scarification was reserved for senior level Shaman. While this was uncommon, the two known examples are one nodule on each cheek or one nodule below the lower lip. On the north coast of Ecuador and into Colombia, this culture is a continuation of the earlier Chorrera style, and is known for their realistic human faces and figures.
