Description

Featured in this lot is a stoneware chief sculpture from Chippewa/Cree artist, Glen La Fontaine, circa 20th century. The sculpture features a wonderfully and professionally crafted stoneware construction. The Native American chief is shown wearing a painted hide with symbolic wolves present and is adorned with traditional hide garments with large earrings and a Mohawk haircut. Glen LaFontaine is a Native American artist who is a member of the Cree/ Chippewa Indian Nation. He was born in Seattle and studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts (1968-1970) as well as the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence (1970-1973). In 1976, he was given a solo exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth. The condition of this Native American sculpture is good with a repair to the hair of the sculpture but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this sculpture are 24 1/2" x 13 1/2" x 12". One of, if not the largest sculpture Glen La Fontaine ever created.*
