In the notes regarding the original portrait by Godfrey Kneller, the National Portrait Gallery, (London,) mentions "A copy from Nuneham** sold Christie's, 11 June 1948, lot 88 as James Thomson by W. Aikman, was later sold Sotheby's, 9 November 1966, lot 89 as Jacob Tonson by Kneller." *Typed note in its entirety reads: "Sold by Christie's in 1948 from the collection of Viscount Harcourt as by William Aikman. Jacob Tonson (d.1730) was secretary of the Kit Kat Club and published works by Dryden, Addison, Pope, etc. Another portrait of Tonson by Kneller is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.
