LBJ Swearing-In Aboard Air Force One, PSA Encapsulated. Iconic!

Original vintage glossy 10" x 8" photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson taking the oath of office aboard Air Force One following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, taken by official White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton. The most notable figures in the image are Judge Sarah T. Hughes, administering the oath in the lower left; the new first lady, Lady Bird Johnson; the new president, Lyndon B. Johnson, with his right hand raised during the swearing-in ceremony; and the mourning former first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. Pencil notations at verso. Encapsulated by PSA as an authentic Type II photograph to an overall size of 13.25" x 9.75". In fine condition. A most historic image captured amidst tragedy in Dallas.

For the inauguration of President Johnson, 27 people squeezed into the 12" x 15" stateroom of Air Force One. Adding to the discomfort of overcrowding was the lack of air conditioning, as the aircraft had been disconnected from the external power supply in order to take off promptly. The swearing-in ceremony was administered by Hughes and represented the first time that a woman administered the presidential oath of office, as well as the only time it was conducted on an airplane. Instead of the usual Bible, Johnson was sworn in upon a missal found on a side table in Kennedy's Air Force One bedroom. After the oath had been taken, Johnson kissed his wife on the forehead. She then took Jackie Kennedy's hand and said: "The whole nation mourns your husband."
