Description
Oil on canvas painting after noted British - American artist, George Henry Boughton (1833 - 1905). Inscribed at bottom right, "Waterbury from Boughton". Like many scenes painted by Boughton, this painting shows a group of Puritans / Pilgrims. In this particular painting, one man admonishes a group of men who are smoking tobacco. Women are also present in the image, speaking and discussing the scene unfolding. A few broken clay pipes lie strewn on the ground. This painting is painterly, with loose brushstrokes. This is a very intriguing picture of historical interest. Framed in recent frame. Good condition, craquelure on surface. Painting is loose from frame. 30" wide by 20" tall (canvas), 34 1/2" wide by 24 1/4" tall (framed).
