Hacquet (Balthasar) Neueste physikalisch-politische Reisen...durch Dacischen und Sarmatischen oder Nordlichen Karpathen, parts 1 and 2 only (of 4), first edition, engraved frontispiece, engraved map vignettes to titles, engraved vignette illustrations, 13 hand-coloured engraved plates, one folding, foxing, later half vellum over white glazed boards, spines gilt with quadruple orange labels, [Bobins 1433], 8vo, Nurnberg, im Verlag der Raspischen Buchhandlung, 1790-91.
⁂ Rare work on the Carpathian mountains, covering geology, mineralogy, palaeontology, botany and peoples of the area. Most of the plates in these 2 parts show local costumes. Hacquet (c. 1739-1815) was a surgeon in the mining town of Idrija and professor of anatomy and surgery in Ljubljana. Under the protection of Maria Theresa and Joseph II, he travelled around the Austrian Empire and was the first explorer of the Julian Alps.
