Attributed to Platt Powell Ryder (New York, 1821-1896), oil on canvas painting, depicting an African-American figure seated on a mule-drawn cart, likely on the road to Darbytown, Pennsylvania from the artist's native New York. The seated figure gestures toward a woman and a child who stand in the road. The people and landscape are rendered loosely while the mule is described in greater detail. Unsigned. A title plaque attached to the frame attributes the painting to "P. P. Ryder, A. N. A." Housed in a giltwood frame with title plaque. Sight: 17 1/2" W x 14 1/2" H. Frame: 24 3/4" W x 20 3/4" H. Late 19th century. Note: The Smithsonian American Art Museum's Inventory of American Paintings lists this painting or a version of the same with similar dimensions, control number 19480006, as having been in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Allan T. Stradley of Chestertown, Maryland in 1972.
