MUCH MORE IMPRESSIVE IN PERSONThis is a Fantastic and Historic Antique Gorham Sterling Silver Michigan Naval Force USS Yosemite Award Plaque…Overall it measures 20 x 16 1/2 inches with the sterling silver plaque itself measuring 15 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches and is 1/8 inch thick at the edges with the USS Yosemite and the larger text being raised cast…The quality of the workmanship is second to none with exquisite detail…The Gorham Silver Marks and artist signature are on the lower right ( see close up )…The crews awarded are engraved on the lower half and include Grand Rapids , Saginaw , Hancock , and Detroit…This plaque is even more impressive in person and the photographs do not do it justice…So much desirability for so many varied reasons…Certain to be a crown jewel of a collection and a true museum piece.During the Spanish–American War, members of the Michigan Naval Militia organized into the Michigan Naval Brigade and constituted the majority of the crew of USS Yosemite. During the war, the Yosemite intercepted the Spanish steamer SS Antonio Lopez, beginning the Third Battle of San Juan.The naval militia remained active through World War I, and included a University of Michigan division. During the war, members of the Michigan Naval Militia served in Naval Railway Battery crews on the Western Front.
