U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword and Scabbard,
Schuyler, Hartley, & Graham, New York, mid-19th century.
Gilded brass hilt with finely textured openwork foliate scroll counter-guard, textured knuckle bow and finely detailed pommel, ray skin covered grip with fine brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single wide fuller, the upper two-thirds of the blade with frosty etched panel depicting a liberty cap, foliate devices, eagle, crossed flags with inscription 'Stand by the Union and intertwined 'US,' the ricasso marked 'SCHUYLER/HARTLEY/& GRAHAM/NEW YORK,' the back of the blade with etched leaf pattern, leather washer at top of blade; black leather scabbard with gilded brass mounts, the upper mount engraved 'MLKnox' and with two suspension rings.
Blade lg. 31 3/8, overall lg. 37 1/4 in.

Sword is in an excellent state of preservation, the hilt shows thinning to the gilding on the edges of the counter-guard and upper side of the pommel, ray skin is excellent and the brass wire wrapping is intact with only minor looseness; blade is bright and nearly as new with only minor areas of light gray mottling toward the tip; scabbard has areas of surface loss, but is stable and gilding on the mounts shows only light wear.
