Buchanan Sends Thanks for Bucks Head - A Play Off His Name
A rare letter written by James Buchanan as President. 1p, measuring 6.5" x 8", Washington, D.C., dated March 26, 1857. Signed "James Buchanan" and addressed to James A. Hurst Esq. Buchanan thanks Hurst for the gift of a large mounted buck's head, which has been hung in the White House: "I accept with much pleasure the beautifully prepared Buck's head which you have done me the honor of presenting to me. It has now an appropriate place in the White House where it has been much admired. With many thanks for this when of your regard, I remain yours very respectfully…" The letter has flattened mail folds and a small tear/hole at the lower left side. Minor toning and soiling throughout. With a large, bold signature. Very good.
It's fitting that James Buchanan was gifted a buck's head as during the 1856 presidential election campaign, he employed the play on his name. Several coins were struck showing a buck jumping over a cannon, mimicking the name of Buchanan. His nephew, nephew, James Buchanan Henry, also went by “Buck.”
