1908 WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT Typed Letter Boldly Signed as President-Elect to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution
WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT (1857-1930). 27th President of the United States, 42nd Secretary of War (1904-1908) and the 10th Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930), the Only Person to have held both offices.
December 11, 1908-Dated, Typed Letter Boldly Signed, "Wm H Taft" as President-Elect, measuring 5.25" x 8.25", 1 page, Washington, D.C., Choice Very Fine. This Letter Addressed to Henry Stockbridge, judge of the Baltimore City Supreme Bench and member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, on Taft's personalized letterhead. In this letter, the President-elect declines an invitation to attend the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution's next meeting, as Taft, who'd recently won the Presidential election of 1908, would be too busy to participate. It reads, in part:
"... I thank you and the members of the executive committee very much for this kind invitation, which I must decline. I do not know what my engagements will be at that time, but it is likely that I shall be under such pressure of official matters that it will not be possible for me to accept. - Very sincerely yours, - (Signed) Wm. H. Taft."
