Description
Daniell (Thomas) Five plates, from "Views in Calcutta", from a set of 12, etchings and aquatint with hand-colouring, images each approx. 405 x 525 mm (16 x 20 3/4 in), laid onto paper mounts [?] as issued, minor spotting, surface dirt, some browning and scuffs, unframed, [bearing Archer nos. 185-189], [circa 1788]
Provenance:
From the Collection of the Late W.G. and Mildred Archer; thence by descent.
⁂ "An advertisement was published in the Calcutta Chronicle of 17 July 1786, only a few months after the Daniells reached India, which listed that the twelve views were published at twelve gold Mohurs to subscribers, eighteen to non-subscribers. The plates were one of Thomas' first attempts at aquatint, produced in a difficult climate, entirely by him, without recourse to facilities or assistance. The hand-colouring was done by local artists". [Abbey]
