Description
Union General Franz Sigel ALS
Autograph Letter Signed, "F. Sigel", 1p, 5" x 8", New York City, March 29, 1879. Accompanied by an engraving of Sigel in uniform with printed signature. Letter shows expected folds and creasing. Minor toning and light soiling. Notations at verso from previous collector. In fine condition.
Sigel's letter to a fellow general, in full: "I thank you for the two copies of the Pha. Inquirer and would have called at your office but did not come down town yesterday and day before. I also read this morning the telegraphic dispatch from Utica and hope it is true! I hear that Pope will come to this city in a court martial case." He then adds a postscript: "The Staats-Zeitung of today has an article about your case but seems to be mistaken in regard to several points."
Franz Sigel (1824-1902) was a German American military officer, revolutionary and immigrant to the United States who was a teacher, newspaperman and politician. Sigel served as a Union major general in the American Civil War. His ability to recruit German-speaking immigrants to the Union armies received the approval of President Abraham Lincoln, as the President was actively seeking the support of antislavery, pro-Unionist immigrants. Sigel, always popular with the German immigrants, was a good candidate to advance this plan. He was promoted to brigadier general, one of a number of early politician-generals elevated by Lincoln.
