Very Good-. Cocked, light tone with random foxing, light edgewear, owner's signature, otherwise light wear. Solid hardcover.
Sympathetic biography of John Brown, printed just after his December 1859 execution, following his failed attempt at a slave rebellion in Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). Along with his early life, much detail of his actions in Bloody Kansas, during the warfare between pro-slavery and abolitionists over the future status of Kansas. Brown was idolized by Northern abolitionists as a martyr, and this book helps reinforce the shaping of his cultural status just before the outbreak of the US Civil War. A portion of the proceeds from the book's sale went to the family of John Brown: "They would also call the attention of the public to the fact that a large percentage of each copy sold is secured by contract to the family of Captain John Brown, and every purchaser thereby becomes a contributor to a charitable object, which appeals to all freemen with a force that is irresistible." - Publishers' Card.
