Description
The object in question is a terracotta architectural antefix measuring 7x3.5x1 cm or 2.76x1.38x0.39 inches, dating back to the Seljuk Empire of the 11th-12th centuries AD. Contrary to initial assumptions, this is not an oil lamp but rather a decorative element, possibly from a larger architectural ensemble. The intricate floral and geometric patterns are characteristic of the Islamic art of the period, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic that was prevalent in the architecture of the Seljuk dynasty.
Provenance: This piece was part of the esteemed E.K. collection in Istanbul, acquired in the late 1980s. It has since been in the private collection of Ms. J.F., a collector of Islamic art in London, UK, since 2001, and has been well-preserved, maintaining its historical and cultural significance.
