Description
Dutch Rococo bombe form marquetry tall case clock with 5 tube chimes. The moulded overhanding hood has a stepped serpentine molded and inlaid decoration with pierced foliate grill sides and arched wood and glass hinged door. The trunk with a hinged door and 2 inset panels decorated with stepped & molded arched panel sections decorated with cross-banding, geometric & floral inlays. Moulded bombe style base with each side featuring a inlaid panels, the front depicting the bust of a man, possibly Louis XIV, in cartouche, surrounded by burl-wood veneer and marquetry borders and each side depicting a floral basket cartouche, all raised on a plinth with bracket feet. Brass three train movement with 5 tubes, chimes on the hour and every quarter signed: "B&D / Monastery" within a clock tower trademark (Bawo & Dotter Monastery, Germany). Attached to an arched brass dial with moon-phase, silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals and Arabic every quarter, a sub-seconds dial at the 12-o'clock, pierced brass hands, and applied pierced brass foliate and mask decorative spandrels to corners. Overall - 94"H x 21 1/2"W x 16"D. Northern European likely Dutch/Norwegian, Mid-late 18th century. Includes: Three weights and pendulum. Note: Clock movement was replaced at a later date and married to the clock case.

Condition
Internal works not checked or guaranteed. Retains weights and pendulums, The wooden pendulum shaft is broken. Top is covered by old black linen fabric which is likely not original and detaching from the bonnet in some areas; not visible when clock is viewed from the front. Scattered veneer losses throughout, up to 2 1/2" on left side. Several small breaks, losses and replacements up to 1" to pierced carved foliate grill on sides. Replaced glass panel to door. Dial: Some exfoliation and later painting to moon dial. Oxidation to dial. Trunk: Several small areas of lifting and exfoliation to veneer on door and on sides. 1" area of missing inlay to band at top of trunk. Base: Feet appear to be later replacements. Considerable shrinkage and cracking to veneer, and a few areas of buckling/lifting veneer, along with a few areas of replaced veneer. Losses up to 1" to banding at top of base. 8" area of replaced veneer to rear right side of base.
