Description
McIntosh 240 stereo amplifier with McIntosh tubes (Tested- See Condition Report)
Condition
Tested by TCTubes: "Appears to be in original condition including possibly original tubes. Telefunken smooth plate 12AX7's and 12AU7's. Valuable if they test well. Being in "original condition" means the parts have not been replaced. Many of them should be replaced. It should not be run "as is". A full restoration should be done first. This one required more extensive work to prove that its a good candidate for restoration. Here's what I had to do to verify this amplifier can be restored: - bypass bad current limiter. This was not allowing AC to get through to the power transformer primary winding. I left this old current limiter disabled for now so someone doesn't try to run it as is. It's not safe to run right now. - bypass the primary winding switch that selects between 117v and 125v input. (after fiddling with it a bit, it did start to work fine again, but for testing purposes I bypassed it). I reconnected this switch after testing and it's working fine now, but it should be serviced since it was giving problems. - the secondary windings for the high voltage supply needed to be verified because once I got past the above issues, I was getting very weak high voltage readings. and almost no audio out of both channels. Only 80vdc at the plates rather than over 400vdc. Disconnecting the secondary windings and measuring them proved they were fine. - I added caps to the power supply voltage doubler section and then the whole amp finally came to life. This verifies that among the other issues, the bad power supply caps were preventing the amplifier from working. So, I know this will work once the power supply caps are replaced and much more should be done to restore it to safe operation. The tubes (very valuable) work well enough to pass audio when the amplifier is run conservatively on a variac."
