Description
Nice group of two Civil War newspapers from 1861 and 1863, providing war updates. The first paper: ‘New York Tribune’ 8pp., New York, Dec. 16, 1861, bears a section titled ‘Military Notices’. In part: ‘...Three Dollars bounty will be paid to stout hearted, able men on being mustered...Gen. Burnside’s Expedition...seamen...wanted for the UNITED STATES MARINE ARTILLERY...’, followed by several more requests for able-bodied men. The second paper: ‘The Sun’ 4pp., Baltimore, July 24, 1863, bears the article ‘From the Army of the Potomac’, reading in part: ‘...Lee [Gen. Robert E. Lee] lies between Martinsburg and Winchester, and also rests...he would fain make us believe that we have grossly exaggerated our success...Lee’s position...is such as to demand from Gen. Meade all his vigilance, and call into action all his sagacity, all his genius...’. Directly following this is another article titled ‘The Surrender of Port Hudson’. Both display some light edgewear, else very good.
