Item Details
Description
  • Title: 1756 Saipan. Northwest View of the Largest Mariana Island by the English pirate G. Anson
  • Date/Period: 1756
  • Materials: Copperplate engraved
  • Size: 20 1/2? x 11?

This 1756 copperplate engraving depicts Saipan (Saypan), the largest of the Mariana (Ladrones) Islands, a U.S. Commonwealth located in the western Pacific Ocean. The image shows a view of the northwest side of Saipan, with English pirate George Anson’s flagship, the Centurion, in the background. The Centurion would carry out one of the most successful pirate attacks by capturing a Spanish treasure galleon. The engraving is part of Anson’s ?A Voyage Round the World’, published in London and considered one of the greatest first-hand accounts of around-the-world voyages, adventure, and piracy from the age of exploration. Anson’s mission was to attack Spanish territories in western South America and engage and loot Spanish treasure galleons. Despite losing more than two-thirds of his crew and three of his eight ships, Anson’s determined efforts finally saw success when he captured the larger and better-armed Spanish treasure galleon ?Nuestra Seniora de Cobadonga’ in 1743. This engraving measures 20 1/2? x 11? and is in excellent condition. Authenticity is guaranteed.
