Description
Featured in this lot is this "Arts Decoratifs Documents Etoffes Et Tissus" art portfolio done by Henri Laurens in Paris, France circa 1910-1920. Renowned French sculptor and illustrator Henri Laurens (1885?1954) was a member of the Cubist movement. On February 18, 1885, he was born in Paris, France. Laurens attended the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris after receiving his initial training as a stonemason. Rodin and conventional figurative sculpture had an influence on his early works, but he eventually turned to the abstract and geometric forms of cubism. Laurens was a well-known personality in Paris's avant-garde art movement in the early 1900s. He grew close to prominent artists like Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Georges Braque, all of whom contributed to the growth and acceptance of cubism. Throughout his career, Laurens created a wide variety of sculptures that were influenced by cubism and were frequently distinguished by their abstracted and fractured forms. He experimented with wood, stone, and bronze, among other materials, to create sculptures that highlighted the interaction of volumes and geometric shapes. Laurens was not only a sculptor but also an illustrator who contributed to numerous books and publications. His innovative and experimental style fit in well with the avant-garde and experimental nature of the Paris art scene in the early 20th century. This portfolio shows a hard cover with cloth ties and reads, "Arts Decoratifs Documents Etoffes Et Tissus" in black lettering. The portfolio features extensive write ups on the fabric arts throughout the centuries such as sewing, silk, feathers and more. After the write ups, are colored and black and white colored plates of various designs for ceramics, decorative panels, jewelry, furniture, silver, ironworks and more made by Henri Laurens and Frederic Regamey. The portfolio shows good condition overall with some wear to the cover and papers within. One lithograph has been torn but has been repaired with tape. No major signs of damage are noted. The portfolio measures 16 3/4" L x 12" W x 3/8" D and weighs 2 pounds and 6 ounces.
