Description
Mixed media artwork by Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960 to 1988, an American street artist of Haitian descent, friend of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Oil on signed postcard. The postcard depicts a view of the New General Post Office in NYC. Handwritten text on the backside of the postcard. A three-peaked crown is painted on top of the letter, signed THOR. A fragmental copy of the 1982 painting titled Charles the First, a tribute to jazz musician Charlie Parker. Kingship was a prominent theme in graffiti and jazz cultures, to call an artist or musician a king meant recognizing the power of his talent. The crown image references hierarchies within New Yorks graffiti movement. Provenance: private collection, Hotel des ventes Orleans Madeleine auction, March 24, 2023. Authenticated by Agnes Sevestre-Barbe. Collectible Contemporary American Modernist Art, Graffiti And Street Art.
