Mixed media artwork by Jean-Michel Basquiat, 1960 to 1988, an American street artist of Haitian descent, friend of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Oil on postcard. The card depicts a view of the City Hall Municipal Building in NYC. The backside is painted with an abstract composition with faces, buildings, and crowns. Dated late 1970s. Kingship was a prominent theme in graffiti culture, to call an artist a king meant recognizing the power of his talent. The crown image references hierarchies within New Yorks graffiti movement. Provenance: private collection, Hotel des ventes Orleans Madeleine auction, March 24, 2023. Authenticated by Agnes Sevestre-Barbe.
