Max Mason (American), Sacrifice, 1988, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated 88 mid-bottom edge, depicting the Phillies Spring Training 1987, a night scene, the field viewed from behind first base, within a slim painted wood frame. Frame size: 50 1/2 in. x 60 1/2 inProvenance: With newspaper clipping from The Christian Science Monitor, 1989, reading "The artist, a lifelong baseball fan, captures the ballplayers' poised action as the pitcher winds up for the throw. The painting's perspective places the viewer behind first base, directly involved with the suspended excitement of the game. Mason will exhibit his work at the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y. from July 1 to Aug. 31."
Max Mason (American) was born in Massachusetts and studied in Pennsylvania. He has been represented by the Gross McLeaf Gallery in Philadelphia since 1985. Mason is best known for his baseball paintings. He has painted various murals including a large series for the Phillies? stadium. He has exhibited at the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Butler Institute of American Art. (maxmasonartist.com)
