"The single figure of the fisherman functions in many ways in this painting. He not only gives human presence and a bit of activity to an otherwise uninhabited scene, but also confirms the rural nature of the landscape. A small figure, in comparison to the lofty trees on either side, such a contrast exalts the splendor of nature. But in addition, the very act of fishing was a common motif among American painters of the rural landscape; Durrie himself painted several others, though the present work is, for the artist, a particularly sizable example." - Gerdts
